For municipalities and the public sector

A partner for Sports City Stockholm

A strong sports movement builds social sustainability. In a growing city, access to sports facilities has to be guaranteed. The Dome Sweden makes Stockholm a safer city.

Everyone should have the opportunity for physical activity. In a city that is growing, proximity to sports facilities must therefore be guaranteed. Stockholm has 32,300 inhabitants per sports hall, against 12,700 in Gothenburg, after more than thirty years of shortage.

The Dome Sweden is a purpose-driven company that wants to contribute to solving urban resilience: more people in sport, integration of new Swedes through the democratisation of sport, equal access for girls and women, programmes for people with disabilities, and a place where young people thrive and learn the values of community life.

We are looking for a municipality in the Stockholm region that has the need and a site, and wants to build the arena and sports park together with us.

What the region faces

Stockholm City Hall
  • Inequality in sports facilities: 12,700 Gothenburgers against 32,300 Stockholmers per sports hall
  • A shortage of sports facilities for more than thirty years
  • A population that will reach 2.7 million inhabitants by 2030
  • Poor integration of new Swedes
  • A rise in gang culture and crime
  • Giving girls and women the same access to sport as men

The Dome Sweden aims to be a place for people to thrive through sport, to meet, and to learn the values of community life. The World Health Organization has established that physical activity has the potential to affect 13 of the 17 global goals.

One roof instead of many halls

Traditional expansion means building many small facilities spread across the municipality: more land, more money per court, longer timelines and more car traffic. The Dome Sweden concentrates seven racquet sports, fitness, health, education and events in one multifunctional building with a public sports park around it. It uses land better, it means one trip for a family with children in different sports, and one modern energy system instead of many old ones.

Prevention is cheaper than treatment

Physical inactivity costs Sweden 16.5 billion kronor a year in direct healthcare costs, according to Folkhälsomyndigheten. Accessible training for every age, professional coaching, family activities and rehabilitation under one roof work as a preventive health intervention that relieves public care over time.

A neutral meeting place that breaks down segregation

Sport has a unique ability to break down segregation. The arena is designed as a welcoming, neutral meeting place where people of different backgrounds, cultures and ages meet through movement, with reserved time for schools, clubs and low-income families.

A strong alternative to the street

A safe, coached and meaningful leisure time is one of the most powerful crime-prevention tools a municipality has. Physical activity also improves concentration and school results.

Democratic education through club life

The arena promotes local club life and engages the voluntary network, which strengthens residents’ democratic education, teamwork and sense of responsibility.

A venue that can serve the city in a crisis

A large, flexible, well-equipped building can support the municipality in extraordinary situations if it is planned and equipped for that from the start, in cooperation with the responsible authorities. We treat that as a design requirement.

Local jobs and apprenticeships

The intention is to recruit locally for both construction and operation and to offer apprenticeships aimed at young people from socio-economically disadvantaged areas, in cooperation with the municipality and the employment service.

What we offer a municipality

Guaranteed access to facilities

A multi-sports arena where everyone is welcome, with tennis, squash, padel, beach tennis, touchtennis, badminton, table tennis and fitness under one roof, and a sports park open to the public around it.

Grassroots sport and young people

We work with grassroots sports. We provide Fritidsgård Sport and run after-school sports clubs, with professional coaches in every sport and education all year round.

Integration, equality and inclusion

Classes that attract women, the integration of new Swedes through the democratisation of sport, and programmes for all disabled people in every sport on offer.

A safer city

A safe environment where everyone feels secure, from the equipment to the professionalism of the staff, and a favourite place to meet that gives young people an alternative.

Events and visibility

A 15,000-seat centre court that can host national and international sport, concerts and cultural events, putting the municipality on the map.

Jobs and the local economy

The arena creates jobs in many fields, promotes the growth of sports tourism and becomes a vector for business development in the region.

What we need from a municipality

A site in the Stockholm region with room for the arena and a sports park, and a political will to solve the shortage of sports facilities together with a private, purpose-driven partner. The form of the partnership, from land allocation to long-term agreements on public access and school use, is open for discussion.

We are happy to present the project to councils, committees and administrations, in Swedish or English.

Questions people ask before they get in touch

Which municipalities are you talking to?
We are in dialogue with municipalities in the Stockholm region and open to any municipality in the region with a shortage of sports facilities and a suitable site. Contact us to start the conversation.
Who finances the arena?
The Dome Sweden is a private, purpose-driven company that raises the capital for the arena from investors. The municipality’s contribution is primarily the site and a long-term partnership; the exact form is open for discussion.
How does the arena serve residents who are not club members?
Through the public sports park with climbing walls, exercise machines, fields and a running track frozen for skiing in winter; through Fritidsgård Sport, after-school clubs, classes for women and programmes for people with disabilities; and through events on the 15,000-seat centre court.
Can you present the project to our council or committee?
Yes. Fabrice Mary presents the project in Swedish or English, in person or online. Use the contact form or email info@thedomesweden.com.
How will the municipality know the arena delivers?
The Dome Sweden reports publicly every year on a fixed set of indicators: visitors, the share of children and young people, school and club programmes, participants from disadvantaged areas, girls and women among active participants, events, jobs, physical-activity outcomes and environmental data. The indicator set is agreed with the municipality before opening.
